The Lebaniego Way in Cantabria
From the beginning of the pilgrimage to Santiago, pilgrims following the Northern Way made a detour of a few days from their route to Santiago and went up to the Monastery of Santo Toribio de Liébana to venerate the extraordinary relic brought to Spain in the 5th century by the archbishop of León from the Holy Land The largest of the known fragments of the Holy Cross was brought in the 9th century to this refuge in the Cantabrian mountains, to protect it from the danger of desecration deriving from the Muslim expansion in the Iberian peninsula.
Liebana
The location of the holy relic in the Lebanieghe mountains was not accidental. The valley of Liébana, due to its geographical characteristics, had since ancient times constituted an impregnable bastion for all invaders, and at the time it served as a refuge for the first dynasties of the Christian kingdoms of the north.
