The Camino de Santiago (de la Plata)
This is the path that follows the route of the Roman consular road called precisely Vía de la Plata which in ancient times connected "Emerita Augusta" (Mérida) with "Asturica Augusta" (Astorga) crossing the western part of the Iberian Peninsula from north to east. In the early Middle Ages this route was kept alive both during the Hispanic-Visigothic period and under Islamic domination. The denomination derives etymologically from the Arabic, Ball' latta was in fact the name by which this wide road, paved with a solid path that led to the Christian north, was known by Muslims. It was in fact used by the troops of Almanzor who attacked Santiago de Compostela in 997. In the late Middle Ages the Way was again Christianized and it was possible to travel and pilgrimage to Compostela again after the conquest of Seville and Cordoba by King Ferdinand III the Saint.
This path goes from Seville to Santiago (about 1000 km) is characterized by its truly unique landscape beauties and crosses the beautiful cities of Seville, Merida, Caceres, Salamanca, Zamora and Ourense.
It should be remembered that once Granja de Moreruela has arrived, the pilgrim has two possible routes ahead of him, the first continues to Astorga and from here follows the French Way to Santiago, the second always from Granja de Moreruela along the so-called Camino del Sudest or Camino Sanabres.
The Camino de la Plata is characterized by mostly dirt roads, with traffic limited to agricultural vehicles. Short sections on asphalt. The path, which appears to be well marked by the usual yellow arrows.
